Do You Have Enough Auto Insurance to Protect Your Family?

April 28, 2026 · Walsh Law Firm

Over the past few years, our firm has seen too many people — and their families — suffer financially after a crash simply because they did not carry enough auto insurance. In most of these cases the problem is the same: low liability limits, low uninsured motorist (UM) coverage, and no underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage at all.

Missouri's minimum limits are just $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. If you are seriously hurt, medical bills can climb far past that in a matter of days.

Underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage protects you when you're seriously injured by a driver whose liability coverage is too low — say, $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident. UIM lets you stack your own coverage on top of the at-fault driver's limits to help pay for the additional medical bills, lost wages, and past, present, and future pain and suffering.

Medical payments coverage (MedPay) helps pay medical expenses — doctor visits, hospital stays, ambulance fees, and the like — for you and your passengers. We generally recommend carrying at least $10,000 in MedPay.

We urge you to review your family's auto policy with us, or with a lawyer of your choosing, and make sure you have safe liability coverage (for example, $100,000 / $300,000) along with UM, UIM, and MedPay coverage.
